In a decree in the “DOU”, president appoints Leonardo Barchini to the position of Minister of Education
The president (PT) made official the departure of Camilo Santana from the position of Minister of Education and the appointment of him to occupy the position. The exchange was published in this Thursday’s edition (April 2, 2026) of . Here is it (PDF – 510 kB).
Leonardo Barchini served as executive secretary of the ministry – number 2 in the body. A federal public servant for over 30 years, he is a senior analyst in Science and Technology at Capes and has previously headed the minister’s office, the International Advisory and the MEC Programs Directorate.
The replacement in the MEC is part of the Lula government’s latest round of changes. Around 20 ministers – almost all of them are expected to contest elections in 2026. It is a record that surpasses that of Lula himself: in the first term, in 2006, 14 ministers left to run. In 2022, (PL) had 8 exits.
Brazilian electoral legislation requires those holding positions in the Executive to be incompatible in order to compete in electoral elections.
To replace the ministers who leave their positions, the government prioritized technical names familiar with the established guidelines, professionals who already know the structure and projects of each ministry to guarantee the continuity of public policies in progress.
