Vice President of the Republic Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) stated that anyone who defends the dictatorship should not be able to even run in elections. The statement was made during a coffee with journalists that marked his farewell to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, this Thursday (2).
The phrase was said in response to a question about electoral polls that show Flávio Bolsonaro ahead or technically tied with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). Alckmin stated that research “is the moment”, but that what will count is the date of the election.
“Campaign is a high moment in public life, in which governments can be compared. If you take, on the one hand, democracy with Lula — because we saved democracy, that’s the reality —, it’s democracy versus dictatorship, authoritarianism. In fact, whoever defends dictatorship shouldn’t even be a candidate. You don’t believe in the people, so what are you running for?”, he asked.
Geraldo Alckmin was confirmed by Lula, on Tuesday (31), as a vice-presidential candidate on the ticket that will run for re-election against Flávio in October.
The decision to run again on the ticket came from the vice president himself, who had the freedom to choose the position he would like to run for in this year’s elections — a privilege not granted to other Lula allies, such as Fernando Haddad (PT) and Simone Tebet (MDB).
