Drunk driver runs over and kills two children in Diadema (SP)

A 64-year-old man ran over and killed two children, aged 10 and 6, after breaking into a sidewalk in the city of Diadema, in Greater São Paulo, on Friday afternoon (3). According to the SSP (Public Security Secretariat), Demostenes Dias de Macedo He was drunk and was arrested in the act.

The Military Police were called to respond to the incident and, at the scene, they discovered that the driver he was driving at high speed in a white Hyundai Creta and lost control of the vehicle. When climbing into the pedestrian space, he hit four children which were in front of a residence.

Brothers Sophya De Oliveira Santos, aged 10, and Izaias De Oliveira Santos, aged 6, died. Two other children were injured and taken to area hospitals. There are still no details of their health status, but according to witness reports to the Military Police, the injuries were very serious.

After hitting the victims, the car collided with the gate of a house and hit parked vehicles. Before the police arrived, the driver was restrained by people at the scene and they even tried to lynch him.

According to the SSP, the driver showed signs of intoxication, which was confirmed during clinical examination. Demosthenes refused to take a blood alcohol test.

During interrogation, the arrested driver admitted that he drank a can of beer in the morning and claimed that he fumbled with the car pedals. According to the BO, he “put the gear in ‘drive’ and the accelerator stuck, unable to brake the vehicle and avoid the crash.”

Upon arrest, the man was taken to the city’s 3rd DP, where the case was registered as homicide and negligent bodily injury while driving a motor vehicle. He is at the disposal of Justice.
