Miami experienced a historic moment last Saturday, April 4, 2026. Inter Miami inaugurated its new home, the long-awaited stadium located within the Miami Freedom Park complex, ending a cycle of years of planning, political negotiations and high expectations. More than a simple change of address, the opening of the new stadium represented a structural transformation for the club, the city and Major League Soccer (MLS) itself.
The debut took place with a match against Austin FC and mobilized the entire city. Local authorities and Miami international airport issued warnings about the significant increase in the flow of people, highlighting the impact of the event. The stadium received a full house, with around 26 thousand fans present, in an atmosphere of celebration that took over the city.
A stadium that lives up to the club’s ambitions
The new stadium was presented to the public as a modern arena, dedicated exclusively to football, with a capacity of approximately 26,700 spectators. This is a significant leap compared to the club’s former home, the DRV PNK Stadium, located in Fort Lauderdale, which was temporary and had a smaller capacity.
With stands on two levels, pink seats – the club’s visual identity – and a wide range of premium areas, including boxes and VIP spaces, the stadium followed the standard of the most modern MLS arenas. The project prioritized the fan experience, combining proximity to the field, comfort and entertainment.
The natural grass and infrastructure designed for large events, including more than 4,500 parking spaces and integration with public transport systems, reinforced the stadium’s position as one of the most complete in the country.
Strategic location and urban impact
One of the most relevant differences of the new stadium was its location. It was built within the city of Miami, next to Miami International Airport, in an area formerly occupied by the Melreese Golf Course.
The choice of location proved to be strategic. The region had easy access by Metrorail, Tri-Rail and intermodal connections, which transformed the stadium into a central point for both residents and visitors. Still, the proximity to the airport required logistical attention, a factor that contributed to the increase in traffic recorded on the opening day.
Far beyond football: the Miami Freedom Park project
The stadium was presented as the centerpiece of a much larger development: Miami Freedom Park. The project occupies approximately 131 acres (approximately 53 hectares) and is designed as a multifunctional complex.
Among the main elements of the project are:
• A public park of approximately 58 acres, projected to become the largest in the city
• Commercial areas with shops, restaurants and entertainment
• Corporate spaces and hotels
• Community sports fields
• Structures prepared for shows and large events
In practice, it is a new urban hub that combines sport, leisure and economic development. The stadium began to function as the center of an ecosystem designed to operate throughout the year, and not just on game days.
An inauguration marked by parties and celebrities
The inauguration was attended by key figures in the club’s recent history, including its owner, David Beckham, as well as the cast and MLS directors. Lionel Messi, the team’s main star, was one of the biggest protagonists of the night. The Brazilian phenomenon Ronaldo was also present, reinforcing the symbolism of a new phase for the club.
The event had a grand spectacle atmosphere. Celebrities, athletes from different sports and entertainment personalities were present, transforming the inauguration into an event of global reach. One of the highlights was the stand named in honor of Messi, a rare recognition for a player still active.
A project that faced challenges
The construction of the stadium and complex was the result of a long process. The project went through years of political debates, negotiations with city hall and public approval. The initiative was put to a vote and involved discussions on the use of urban space, environmental impact and economic benefits.
In the end, the understanding prevailed that the project would be a driver of development for the city. The project, mostly financed by the private sector, came to be seen as a milestone for the local economy, generating jobs and stimulating tourism.
A new chapter for football in Miami
The inauguration of the new stadium marked the beginning of a new phase for Inter Miami and football in the United States. At a time of growth in the sport in the country, driven by global stars and large investments, the club now has a structure compatible with its ambitions.
More than a sports arena, the stadium came to symbolize Miami’s consolidation as one of the main centers of world football outside of Europe. For Inter Miami, it was the end of the wait and the beginning of a new story.
Oh, and we can’t forget to talk about the game, which ended 2-2. It was an exciting and historic night: Austin took the lead in the 6th minute with a goal from Guilherme Biro (the first goal in the stadium’s history), but Lionel Messi equalized quickly in the 10th minute with a beautiful header, scoring his first goal in his new home. In the second half, Jayden Nelson put Austin ahead again in the 53rd minute, but Luis Suárez saved the point with an impressive volley in the 82nd minute. Inter Miami dominated possession more, but Austin was dangerous on the counterattacks and was satisfied with the draw away from home. In the end, the stadium’s inauguration party didn’t have a victory, but there were goals and a lot of cheering from the fans!
