Cleitinho targets his opponent and consolidates his candidacy – 04/07/2026 – Brasília Hoje

The senator, pre-candidate for the government of Minas Gerais, tries to form an alliance with Marcelo Aro, until then pre-candidate for the Senate on the governor’s ticket). The gesture was understood by the parliamentarian’s allies as a sign that he will in fact run for Palácio Tiradentes.

This Monday (6), Aro attended the launch of the pre-candidacy of state deputy Eduardo Azevedo (PL), Cleitinho’s brother. The Senator’s idea is to make his relative president of the Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais, precisely to facilitate its articulation if the local government wins.

Cleitinho’s gesture was seen as a sign that he will indeed run for government. Officially, the senator has stated that the decision has not been made and that his political future will only be defined in May.

Aro’s presence, in turn, was interpreted as a sign of Simões’ distancing. The pre-candidate for the Senate was Government Secretary of Romeu Zema (Novo), where he took care of political coordination. When Simões took over the Minas Gerais Executive, the former governor’s right-hand man lost space.

The distance increased when senator Carlos Viana joined Simões’ PSD to try to renew his mandate, which reduced Aro’s space on the ticket. In this way, an alliance with Cleitinho came to be seen as an alternative to the former secretary.

During Eduardo Azevedo’s event, Aro was praised and received public support from Cleitinho. “Four years ago we were competitors… But the election has passed, now it’s time to work together. If you come as a candidate for senator, I want to support you, with the greatest pleasure, for everything you do (…) Anyone who doesn’t know Marcelo Aro can support him, because he works and [se] dedicated”, said the senator.

Cleitinho is seen as the favorite in the dispute for the government of Minas Gerais and is trying to compete with the support of Flávio Bolsonaro, PL’s pre-candidate for President, to consolidate right-wing votes in the state. Simões, in turn, plans to inherit Zema’s seat, including his base of mayors.

On the other side, senator Rodrigo Pacheco joined the PSB to run for government of Minas Gerais with the support of president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The former president of the Senate wants to build a broad front, comprising parties from the left, center and also the right, such as Aécio Neves’ PSDB.
