In a context of rising costs of living in several countries, including the United States, a mother of five children reports the difficulties in supporting her family, even while working, with her husband, up to 10 different jobs, a reality that is not enough to pay all expenses.
The story was shared by Chaunie Brusie, in a first-person blog post, where she describes the financial challenges she has faced over the past few years.
For a decade, her activity as an independent writer, which previously ensured financial stability, suffered a significant drop in demand. The reduction in income led to a constant search for new job opportunities, many of which, according to testimony, did not materialize.
Insufficient income despite multiple jobs
This mother with five children admits she feels like she has lost competitiveness in the job market. To compensate for the loss of income, the household began to accumulate several sources of income.
“Between the two of us, we have 10 different jobs. And still, it seems like it’s not enough”, she reports, cited by the same source, highlighting the financial pressure that continues to mark the family’s daily life.
Despite the diversity of occupations, income has not been sufficient to cover all expenses, including basic charges such as credit card bills.
Day-to-day management is made worse by the fact that it is a large family. Responsibility for household chores and caring for children falls mainly on the mother, which limits her availability for jobs outside the home.
“We don’t have external help, so having a job that requires me to leave home would mean changing all family logistics,” he explains, citing practical difficulties, such as transporting his children to school.
In this context, the solution found has been to combine several part-time jobs, many of them carried out from home, as the same source says.
Various functions to try to balance the accounts
In addition to writing, which she continues to do around 20 hours a week, the mother also works as a remote nurse, library assistant and home care provider, among other occasional activities.
Recently, she also invested in training that allows her to work as a substitute teacher at her daughter’s school, seeking to make professional activity compatible with family life.
Even so, some opportunities are rejected due to low pay or difficulty in combining other professional commitments already undertaken.
Search for alternatives and new opportunities
Given the difficulties, training in the real estate field was also initiated, with the aim of obtaining a license as an agent. According to the same source, the expectation is to find an activity with greater flexibility and income potential, although there is uncertainty regarding the viability of this option.
In turn, the husband maintains a full-time job as a teacher, being the main source of income for the household. At the same time, he also carries out activities in agriculture and carpentry, contributing additional income.
Situation considered unsustainable
Despite the joint effort, the financial situation continues to be described as fragile. According to the testimony, there were months in which the total income was not enough to cover essential expenses. “Realizing that we can’t even pay the bills with 10 jobs is extremely demotivating,” he says.
The possibility of returning to a full-time job in the nursing field is considered, but it raises difficulties, namely the need to work night shifts and the impact on family organization.
