PT do RS agrees to support PDT under pressure from Lula’s allies – 04/09/2026 – Politics

The Rio Grande do Sul directory agreed to support the pre-candidate for the state government, Juliana Brizola, after the party.

The movement strengthens the national alliance between PT and PED members and resolves the issue in Gaucho territory, which until last week was one of the re-election of the President of the Republic.

The PT from Rio Grande do Sul defended the name of former state deputy and former president of Conab (National Supply Company) Edegar Pretto to compete for the Palácio do Piratini. Rio Grande do Sul, however, was one of the three states in which the PDT asked for PT’s support in negotiations to formally enter the Lulista national alliance.

Pretto informed the PT leadership on Wednesday (8) that he would withdraw from the dispute. The party’s state directory is expected to announce the decision late this Thursday morning (9).

Members of the PT leadership, in recent weeks, began to speak, privately, about the possibility of an intervention in the state directory.

This type of movement is traumatic. In 1998, there was a similar intervention in the PT directory in Rio de Janeiro, also to guarantee an agreement with the PDT regarding Lula’s presidential candidacy. The PT leadership forced him into the state government. Years later, sectors of the local PT unhappy with the measure migrated to PSOL.

The agreement between PT and PDT was made by the presidents of the parties, Edinho Silva and Carlos Lupi. In addition to Rio Grande do Sul, PED supporters want PT support in Paraná and Minas Gerais – in the latter case, there are still differences between the two parties.

At the beginning of February, Lupi published a statement on social media stating that the PT had agreed to support Juliana Brizola. Edinho contained the reaction of PT members from Rio Grande do Sul stating that the state candidacies were still under debate.

Days later, Lula received Lupi and Juliana Brizola at the Planalto Palace, which was understood in the political world as a sign of support for the PED supporter.
