Putin says he is available to mediate peace negotiations between the US and Iran

Russian President Vladimir Putin

In a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, the Russian President made himself available to participate in the mediation of the conflict in the Middle East.

Vladimir Putin “stressed that he was willing to continue to facilitate the search for a political and diplomatic solution to the conflict and to serve as a mediator in efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in the Middle East”.

The Russian president did so in a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian.

The Iranian official, according to the Kremlin, thanked Russia for Moscow’s position in international forums with a view to easing hostilities and the humanitarian aid provided to the Iranian people.

Communication between the Iranian and Russian presidents comes after peace talks have taken place. It was the first highest-level direct contact between the US and Iran in 47 years,

According to the US Vice President JD Vance – who did not want to go into details about the negotiations -, the main obstacle was the fact that Iran did not assume a “fundamental commitment” not to seek nuclear weapons “in the long term”.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman told state television that “no one expected” the United States and Iran to reach an agreement in the first round of negotiations, implying that negotiations would continue.

The spokesperson stated that he was “certain that the contacts with Pakistan as well as other friends in the region, will continue“.

The president of the Iranian parliament, who participated in the negotiations in Islamabad, said that the US has not won Iran’s trust and now they must decide if they are capable of it.
