‘They don’t just deserve impeachment, but prison’, says Romeu Zema about STF ministers

The former governor of Minas Gerais and pre-candidate for President for Novo, Romeu Zema defended this Monday (13), the arrest of two ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). During a debate promoted by the São Paulo Commercial Association (ACSP), the Minas Gerais native raised the tone of his criticism of the Judiciary, mainly targeting Dias Toffoli and Alexandre de Moraes.

The speech takes place amid the developments in the investigations into the Master case, which point to links between banker Daniel Vorcaro and members of the Court. The case led to requests for impeachment in the Senate against Toffoli and Moraes for crimes of responsibility. Against Toffoli, there is the accusation of judging cases in which he would be suspected; Moraes is accused of conduct incompatible with his position.

— The untouchables are those who consider themselves above the law (…). Mainly two ministers, Alexandre de Moraes and Dias Toffoli. These two, for me, not only deserve impeachment proceedings, they deserve prison – Zema told journalists.

The former governor was also questioned about a video published on social media alongside senator Flávio Bolsonaro, PL’s presidential pre-candidate. The recording follows a viral video on social media, called “Será?”, in which the two joke about the possibility of forming a presidential ticket, reversing recurring speculation about Zema being vice president.

In the video, the Minas Gerais native appears next to Flávio and suggests, in a relaxed tone, that the senator could be his deputy, to which the parliamentarian responds with the phrase “could it be?”, before both laugh. The publication comes amid discussions about possible alliances for 2026.

When asked about the content, Zema disagreed and stated that it was just a moment of relaxation. Despite this, behind the scenes, the former governor’s name is mentioned as a possible vice-president in a possible candidacy by Flávio Bolsonaro. He, however, has reiterated that he intends to maintain his pre-candidacy for the Palácio do Planalto.

During the interview, Zema also made direct criticisms of the right-wing camp and the PL itself. He said that there are “rotten fruits” in other parties, including Flávio Bolsonaro’s party, and stated that Novo adopts more rigorous criteria, with the expulsion of members involved in irregularities. The former governor left the place without detailing who he was referring to when making the criticisms.

— I am a right-winger that has no corruption, no scandals. And there are right-wingers out there who are also involved with wrong things. So I’m right-wing, but I’m different. In PL I think there are some bad fruits there. In the New, if there is one, we will put it out — he concluded.
