After two years, Madeira will reopen the iconic PR1 Vereda do Areeiro hiking route, which connects the three highest peaks on the island. The panoramic hiking trail was damaged by a forest fire in 2024, since then it had to undergo forced closure and extensive security measures, writes TASR according to the website of the Euronews station.
After the restoration is completed, tourists will soon return to the seven-kilometer route that passes through the peaks Pico do Areeiro (1818 m n. m.), Pico das Torres (1851 m n. m.) a Pico Ruivo (1862 m n. m.).
The alpine hiking experience begins at the Pico de Areeiro viewpoint, and the route then leads hikers through tunnels carved into the volcanic rock, steep ridges, and panoramic views above the clouds. It is also called “stairway to heaven”. It takes about seven to eight hours to walk the trail there and back at a normal pace.
Tourists in Madeira pay 4.50 euros on the spot this year (3 euros when booking in advance) for entry to the marked hiking trails, with a limited daily limit of 2,000 visitors. The aim is to reduce ‘traffic congestion’ on the footpath at busy times and reduce pressure on the island’s ecosystems. In the case of the popular PR1, the fee will be 10.50 euros. The collected money is intended to ensure the safety of the sidewalk and the protection of the surrounding nature.
The reopening of the PR1 Vereda to Areeiro route coincides with the Madeira Island Ultra Trail running challenge, which takes place from 25 to 26 April 2026.
