After years, Washington is easing sanctions against Venezuela’s central bank

The United States has eased sanctions restrictions against Venezuela. Mutual relations between Washington and Caracas continue to improve.

On Tuesday, the administration of US President Donald Trump eased sanctions restrictions against the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV) and three other financial institutions operating in the country. TASR informs about it according to the reports of the AFP and Reuters agencies.

The US Department of the Treasury issued licenses allowing certain financial transactions with BCV (Banco Central de Venezuela), which was sanctioned in April 2019, as well as Banco Universal, Banco Digital de los Trabajadores and Banco del Tesoro.

Release of sanctions

The move comes two weeks after the United States lifted sanctions against Venezuela’s interim president, Delca Rodríguez. She took power in the country after US forces detained her predecessor Nicolás Maduro in a military operation in January.

For nearly a decade, Venezuela’s central bank and state-owned banks have faced restrictions on conducting financial transactions abroad due to a lack of correspondent banks to broker them, a situation exacerbated by the imposition of US sanctions on the country in 2019.

Improving relationships

Relations between Washington and Caracas have improved since Maduro’s detention. Rodríguez complied with the US president’s demands that Venezuela open up its energy industry to US companies.
