Iran celebrates the truce in Lebanon and calls for the departure of Israeli forces from its territory
This Friday, Iran celebrated with “satisfaction” the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, assured that it is part of the truce agreement closed with the United States last week and asked that Israeli troops leave Lebanese territory.
The spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Ismail Bagaei, welcomed the 10-day ceasefire that came into effect last night, according to a statement reported by Press TV. “Since the beginning of talks with various regional and international parties, including the Islamabad negotiations, the Islamic Republic of Iran has constantly stressed the imperative need for a simultaneous ceasefire in the entire region, including Lebanon,” Bagaei said. “Following the Islamabad talks, Iran pursued this goal with utmost seriousness,” he continued.
The United States and Iran held negotiations last Saturday in Islamabad, mediated by Pakistan, which did not end in an agreement between the two rivals, after a ceasefire agreement in the war that Tehran said included an end to hostilities in Lebanon.
The ceasefire in Lebanon was announced during the visit of the head of the Pakistani army, Asim Munir, to Tehran, where he met with senior Iranian officials.
Bagaei further called for Israel to abandon “all occupied territories in southern Lebanon” and “release all prisoners.” (Efe)
