Netanyahu says he will establish ‘safety zone’ in southern Lebanon despite ceasefire

The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, said this Thursday, 16, that the Israeli Army will continue in Lebanon even after American President Donald Trump’s announcement of a ceasefire that would also include Hezbollah. According to Netanyahu, the country’s forces will create a ten-kilometer security zone around the neighboring country.

“We are not leaving,” Netanyahu said in a video message released by his office. “This security zone allows us to deter invasion of our communities and prevent anti-tank attacks against them,” he added.

The Israeli leader said the country has the chance to sign a historic peace agreement with Lebanon, but reiterated Israel’s demand for the disarmament of Hezbollah. According to Netanyahu, Trump would also have agreed to maintain the naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.
