As vehicle license plates in Brazil can go through a new change. The Road and Transport Committee of the Chamber of Deputies approved last Tuesday (14) Bill 3214/23, which makes mandatory return of information from the municipality and state of registrationin addition to the flag of the Federation unitin the identification of cars.

The text is authored by Senator Esperidião Amin (PP-SC) and had already been approved by the Federal Senate. Now, it changes the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB). The main objective, according to the author, is to allow police and traffic agents quickly identify the origin of the vehicle in cases of infractions, accidents, robberies, thefts or other crimes.

The committee’s rapporteur, deputy Hugo Leal (PSD-RJ), defended the approval of the project. “The initiative will also restore the cultural and identity meaning of the plates, reinforcing the sense of belonging to the region and local pride and facilitating local perception when it comes to ‘outside’ vehicles”, stated the parliamentarian.

Today, the signs follow the Mercosur standardcom lyrics e numbers which indicate only the vehicle categorywithout any reference to the place of registration. If the project is approved, the new signs will bring this information clearly and visibly.

If sanctioned, the text will come into force one year after publication in the Official Gazette of the Union. This will give the National Traffic Department (Denatran) and state traffic agencies time to prepare for the change.

The project still needs to go through the Chamber’s Constitution, Justice and Citizenship Committee (CCJ), where it will be conclusively analyzed. It then goes to a plenary vote in the Chamber and then returns to the Senate (if it undergoes changes). Finally, it depends on the sanction of the President of the Republic to become law.
