Fico revealed the details of the phone call with Magyar: How did he comment on the hot topic of the Druzhba pipeline and the lawsuit?

  • Robert Fico telephoned the winner of the Hungarian elections, Péter Magyar.
  • Fico congratulated Magyar on his victory and invited him to Slovakia.
  • The main topic of the conversation was the Druzhba pipeline and the lawsuit against RePowerEU.

Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) spoke on the phone with the winner of the Hungarian elections, Péter Magyar, on Tuesday. Fico congratulated him on the result and invited him as the newly elected prime minister on a traditional visit to Slovakia.

The main reason for the phone call with Magyar was to find out the positions of the new Hungarian political leadership regarding the reopening of the Druzhba pipeline and the lawsuit against the RePowerEU regulationwhich the Slovak Republic and Hungary are filing against the EU in connection with the stoppage of the flow of Russian gas and oil. According to Fico, Magyar has so far only commented on the questions in general terms. TASR was informed about this by the press and information department of the Slovak Government Office.

“Referring to the fact that Péter Magyar is not yet the official Prime Minister of Hungary, the winner of the Hungarian elections only answered my questions in general terms. However, it clearly emerged from the interview that Péter Magyar’s priority in Slovak-Hungarian relations is and will be the Beneš decrees, where we have fundamentally different positions,” said the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic.

Fico added that he proposed to discuss any other topics outside of energy security in person. He clarified that Magyar’s official visit to Slovakia or his visit to Budapest will be preceded by a working meeting at the EU summit in Brussels. Fico emphasized that Slovak-Hungarian relations have not been the subject of political competition for many years and that he cares about the good coexistence of Slovaks and Hungarians in Slovakia.
