On May 1st, the legal basis that enables camera surveillance of entrances to the city comes into force. There are still a few hurdles to overcome before implementation
In the future, the city of Vienna wants to significantly reduce the number of entries from the ring towards the city center – and monitor compliance with the rules using a camera system.
For years, the city of Vienna has been pursuing the plan to implement a traffic-calmed city center with camera surveillance. However, there has so far been no legal basis for the project. This will now come into force on May 1st: Specifically, the amendment to the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) implemented by the federal government will create the conditions for access control with cameras. Cities can use this to implement monitored entry restrictions or entry bans in clearly defined areas.
