The minister of the (Supreme Federal Court) apologized this Thursday (23) for having cited homosexuality when rebutting the pre-candidate for President’s (Novo) criticism of the court.
“I was wrong when I mentioned homosexuality when referring to what would be an insulting accusation against former governor Romeu Zema. I apologize for the mistake”, wrote the minister in a publication on X (formerly Twitter).
Gilmar also stated that there is “an industry of defamation and slanderous accusations” against the Supreme Court and said he intends to confront it. “I reiterate what is right,” he said.
Earlier, in an interview with the Metrópoles portal, the minister portrayed the former governor of Minas Gerais as homosexual and asked whether this would not be “offensive”.
“If we start making jokes about serious things, about institutions, imagine that we start making dolls of Zema as a homosexual. Isn’t that offensive?”, he said at the time.
The speech had negative repercussions, and federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) accused the minister of homophobia. In a post on
Gilmar sent his colleague Alexandre de Moraes, this week, a request for an investigation against Zema in the fake news inquiry after the presidential candidate released, last month, a video on his social networks in which a doll that imitates the magistrate talks to another that represents minister Dias Toffoli about the Banco Master case.
In the images, Toffoli’s puppet asks Gilmar’s puppet to suspend the breach of his confidentiality, determined by the Senate’s CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) into Organized Crime. The magistrate’s puppet then overturns the decision.
