Moraes orders PGR to speak out about Bolsonaro’s surgery

Prosecutor’s Office will have 5 days to issue an opinion on carrying out the procedure on the former president’s right shoulder

Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court, gave the Attorney General’s Office 5 days to comment on the defense request of (PL) to for the former president to do a Read (PDF – 122 kB).

Bolsonaro’s lawyers asked that the procedure, recommended by a specialist doctor, was carried out on April 24 or 25, 2026. Read the (PDF – 1MB).

On Monday (April 20), the defense reported that Bolsonaro and was ready to undergo surgery on his right shoulder. The lawyers requested that the request be urgently analyzed by the STF, due to the medical nature of the case.

The medical recommendation is that the procedure be carried out arthroscopically, a minimally invasive technique. Surgery aims to repair the rotator cuff and associated injuries. According to reports sent to the Court, Bolsonaro, 71 years old, is showing general clinical improvement after suffering from bilateral pneumonia.

Sentenced to 27 years and 3 months in prison for attempted coup, the former president is serving temporary since March 27th.

The benefit, with an initial term of 90 days, was granted by Moraes due to the former president’s health conditions. Lawyers ask that authorization covers all phases of treatment, including preparatory acts, pre-operative, hospitalization, surgery, post-operative and rehabilitation.

ORDER HISTORY

This is not the first time that Bolsonaro’s defense has called the STF to address the need for surgery. On April 3, lawyers sent a physiotherapeutic report to Moraes, stating that the former president suffered from chronic and intense pain in his shoulder.
