On Friday, April 24, 2026 at 9:45 p.m will bring television Two new episode of the show Between us and Kata Martinková with a theme The future is the core. The broadcast comes symbolically just two days before the anniversary of the accident in Chernobyl, which forever went down in history as a memento of failure, but also as the reason why nuclear energy has fundamentally changed over the past decades. The show will therefore look at the core without unnecessary fear, but with respect, responsibility and an effort to understand what place it has in our lives today and what role it can play in the future.
The guest of Katy Martinková will be one of the most important personalities of Slovak nuclear science, Professor Vladimír Slugeňwho will explain to the audience clearly and with humor how nuclear fission works, why a huge amount of energy is hidden in a small amount of uranium and why, according to him, it is true that when we understand things, we are less afraid of them.
He will also address the topic of nuclear power plant safety, the differences between Chernobyl and Fukushima, and explain how nuclear energy has learned from the past. Is there a risk that an accident as huge as Chernobyl could happen even today? You will find out in the video demonstration.
He will bring a strong personal and professional perspective associate professor Denisa Nikodémováan internationally recognized specialist in protection against ionizing radiation and holder of the Pribina Cross, First Class. He will talk about his lifelong work in public health, about the use of radiation in medicine, about radon in homes, but also about how the protection of doctors and patients has changed significantly over the decades.
He will bring up the topic of the future of the kernel Dr. Stanislav Pecko from Slovenské elektrární, an expert in small modular reactors. He will explain to the audience what these devices mean, how they could work, why they are being talked about as one of the possibilities of the energy future and whether they have a place in Slovakia as well. We will also talk about decommissioned coal sites, new technologies, spent nuclear fuel or why high-quality technical education of young people will be necessary for further nuclear development.
