Tensions around Chernobyl: Volodymyr Zelenskyy talks about Russia’s nuclear terrorism and the threat to the whole world

On the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl tragedy, Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of nuclear terrorism. He claims that his attacks are bringing the world to the brink of disaster again.

On Sunday, marking the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of committing “nuclear terrorism.” This was reported by the AFP agency, writes TASR.

  • President Zelenskyi accused Russia of nuclear terrorism near Chernobyl.
  • Russian drones repeatedly fly over the former power plant.
  • In the past, a drone crashed into the sarcophagus of the Chernobyl reactor.
  • Russia occupied the power plant during the first weeks of the invasion.

In a post on the X Network, Zelensky said that Russia, with its invasion of Ukraine, launched in February 2022, “once again brings the world to the brink of a man-made disaster.” He pointed out that Russian drones regularly fly over the site of the former nuclear power plant, and one of them even crashed into the concrete sarcophagus that protects the remains of the fourth reactor unit in February last year. At the time, Moscow denied responsibility and accused Ukraine of probably carrying out the attack itself.

“The world must not allow this nuclear terrorism to continue, and the best way to achieve this is to force Russia to stop its reckless attacks,” the Ukrainian president emphasized.

Russia has repeatedly launched drones

Ukraine’s Attorney General Ruslan Kravchenko said this week that Russia had repeatedly launched drones and missiles on a flight path near the disused Chernobyl power plant during attacks on Ukraine. According to him, such attacks have no military significance and their purpose is exclusively to intimidate and spread fear.

Russia occupied the plant for more than a month during the first weeks of the invasion, when its troops tried to advance on the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, but then withdrew. The Chernobyl nuclear accident occurred in 1986. After it, radiation spread throughout Europe. The last functional reactor of the power plant was shut down in 2000.

“We remember all those who gave their lives to eliminate the consequences of this tragedy. May all victims of the Chernobyl disaster rest in peace,” added Zelensky.
