PM used taser pistol to disarm 45-year-old suspect; delegate defined case as medical, not police
A 45-year-old man threatened passengers with a sword in the in Campinas, São Paulo, during Sunday night (April 26, 2026). THE was triggered and immobilized the suspect, who was in a psychotic episode. Nobody was injured.
The PM received information that the man was armed with a sharp weapon and making threats in the public area of the airport and went to the location. During the approach, he was immobilized with a Taser stun gun and was disarmed. The sword was kept in the waist area.
According to the police report, the man was in a “visible” of a psychotic break. The police record indicates that he showed signs of disconnection from reality. The suspect was taken to Pronto Socorro São José to undergo medical examinations and, later, taken to the police station.
At the police station, the man demonstrated “evident signs of being totally disconnected from reality”. He believed he was talking to members of the criminal group Comando Vermelho.
The delegate responsible for the case assessed the man’s mental state and, considering the condition presented, understood the episode as a medical case, not a police one.
The sword was seized by authorities. The case was registered as the location and seizure of an object by the 4th Tourist Assistance Police Station, Deatur de Viracopos.
The communication team at Viracopos Airport confirmed the episode to Poder360 through note. The terminal administration highlighted that the man was in the public area of the airport.

He was taken to UPA São José, and the incident was registered at the 4th Tourist Assistance Police Station, Deatur de Viracopos.”
