France’s guards are sounding the alarm about prison overcrowding

If anyone knows about the prison conditions in French prisons, it is of course the guards. On Monday, hundreds of them followed the call of their union Ufap-Unsa and blocked access to around half of the institutions. Affected were the notorious Les Baumettes prisons in Marseille and Fleury-Mérogis, the largest prison in Europe with 4,500 inmates in the southeast of Paris. Since then, guards have blocked the entrances, set fire to wooden pallets or hung banners with the inscription “Fully booked” on the heavy metal gates.
