Donald Trump harshly attacked German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for his words about the war in Iran. Tensions between Washington and European allies are rising again.

  • US President Donald Trump criticized Chancellor Friedrich Merz for his words about Iran.
  • Friedrich Merz claimed that the United States is being humiliated by Iran in the negotiations.
  • Trump accused Merza of tolerating Iran’s nuclear weapon, which was not true.
  • At the same time, Merz declared that the United States does not have a strategy to end the war.
  • Trump is considering withdrawing from NATO and calling the alliance a paper tiger.

“Obviously, the Iranians are negotiating very skillfully – or simply not negotiating very skillfully… The whole nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership,” the German leader said on Monday during a visit to a grammar school in the city of Marsberg, commenting on the currently suspended talks between Iran and the US.

Trump’s harsh reaction

“German Chancellor Friedrich Merz thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about!” Trump wrote in response in a post on his Truth Social network, misinterpreting Merz’s position. According to Reuters, the chancellor is of the opinion that Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon.

Merz also expressed his belief on Monday that the United States does not have a strategy to end the war against Iran. According to him, this conflict has a direct impact on Germany’s economy.

Contradictions between allies

The statements of the German chancellor only underlined the contradictions between Washington and its European allies in NATO, noted the Reuters agency. Recently, Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO countries for their reluctance to get involved in a war with Iran, and has also announced that he is considering withdrawing from the Alliance, which he called a paper tiger.
