Organization designated as terrorist by the United States since 2019, will not be allowed to enter the country
Iranian athletes they won’t have any problems to enter the United States during the World Cup. However, members linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) — an organization designated as terrorist by the United States since 2019 — will not be authorized to enter the country.
The words are from the American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio: “Nobody from the United States has told them they can’t come. The athletes will not be hindered.”
Rubio was even more direct: Iran will not be able to take members of the Revolutionary Guard to American soil disguised as journalists, technicians or managers. According to him, the United States does not want to harm the athletes, but it also will not allow terrorists to enter under any pretext.
The concern exists because, historically, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has had strong influence over several Iranian institutions, including sports federations. There are records that, in previous events in the USA, members of Iranian delegations have already been denied visas for exactly these connections.
Clear summary:
- Athletes and players: free way.
- The entire entourage: will pass through rigorous analysis of visas.
- Any indication of links with the Revolutionary Guard: denied.
The American focus is to ensure safety without hindering legitimate sports participation.
