The United States will soon start issuing passports with the likeness of President Donald Trump, an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday, AFP reports, writes TASR.
- The United States is preparing a limited edition of passports with the likeness of Donald Trump.
- Special passports are created on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
- These passes will only be available in Washington.
Special issue of passports
Following reports from Fox News and The Bulwark, the US State Department has confirmed that it is preparing limited edition passports to mark the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence.
The articles also included two proposals for images to appear in the documents. One of them with the official photo of Trump placed on the Declaration of Independence and with his signature in gold. The other shows a historical painting of the founders of the United States.
“As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary in July, the State Department is preparing to issue a limited number of specially designed U.S. passports to commemorate the historic event,” State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said on the social network X, referring to the Fox News article.
Passports will only be available in Washington
Another department official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Trump-themed passports would be available only in Washington “while supplies last” and at no extra charge. The department will start issuing these documents in the summer. It is not yet clear whether passport applicants will be able to refuse this special version.
As AFP reminds, there are few current cases in the world, especially in democracies, where portraits of current leaders would appear on passports. Most countries use historical motifs or nature.
Trump’s face on passports
Current American travel documents depict several scenes from the country’s history, such as the moon landing or the Statue of Liberty.
CNN reported that the depiction of Trump in passports is the latest and most prominent case of using his likeness on an item to commemorate the 250th anniversary of US independence. She added that unlike a commemorative coin or a ticket to national parks, it is an internationally recognized identity document that is usually valid for 10 years.
