The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) suspended the trial in which the current governor of Roraima, Edilson Damião (União), and the former governor Antonio Denarium (Republicans), are accused of abuse of political and economic power during the 2022 campaign. The suspension is to await an adjustment in the vote of minister André Mendonça. The trial should resume on Thursday, 30th, to announce the result.
There is already a majority to revoke Damião’s mandate and order new elections to be held in the State, and make Denarium ineligible until 2030.
The Court hears an appeal against the decision of the Regional Electoral Court of Roraima (TRE-RR) that condemned Denarium and Damião. The reason was the use of the public machine to obtain political advantages by making electoral use of the “Cesta da Família” and “Morar Melhor” programs.
Denarium resigned from his position in March to run for the Senate, which led his then vice-president, Damião, to take over the government.
The score is 5 to 1 to revoke Damião’s mandate, and it was unanimous to make Denarium ineligible. The rapporteur, Isabel Gallotti, voted to confirm the conviction of both and was accompanied by ministers André Mendonça, Estela Aranha, Antônio Carlos Ferreira, Floriano de Azevedo Marques and Cármen Lúcia.
Minister Kassio Nunes Marques was the only one to partially disagree. He defended Denarium’s ineligibility, but voted to acquit Damião.
