The former Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva, said that the non-approval of the former Attorney General of the Union, Jorge Messias, for the Federal Supreme Court was not only a defeat for President Lula, but a defeat for the whole of Brazil. “The one who lost was not President Lula. The defeat was for Brazil. And no one can defeat more than 200 million people with impunity”, said Marina, during an event celebrating Labor Day at the headquarters of the Metalworkers Union of São Paulo and Mogi das Cruzes, in the capital of São Paulo.
Also participating in the event are the former Minister of Finance and pre-candidate for the government of the State of São Paulo, Fernando Haddad, and the former Minister of Planning, Simone Tebet. Tebet and Marina are tipped to contest the Senate election for São Paulo.
During her speech, Marina highlighted the importance of defending democracy this May 1st and drew attention to new struggles of the working class, such as the end of the 6 x 1 scale and equal pay between men and women.
She also praised the effects of the current Lula government, saying that the PT member’s work made Brazil leave the Hunger Map again. Marina also highlighted the measures taken by Haddad at the head of the Treasury, which began to collect taxes from the richest.
According to Marina, the current world has experienced a wave of “stimulus to violence” and polarization and that, therefore, it is important to promote dialogue. “And the best conversation we have is the one we have at home, to be able to get things right. When we get things right at home, we talk better outside,” she said, extolling the importance of democracy.
“Only in democracy does a worker become president to do good things. Only in democracy could a rubber tapper’s daughter, illiterate, until the age of 16, there in the Amazon rainforest, be a minister”, he recalled.
