US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he was not happy with Iran’s new proposal for peace talks with the United States. Negotiations between the two countries have stalled during a ceasefire that has lasted for several weeks. TASR informs about it according to the agencies AFP and Reuters.
“At this point, I’m not happy with what they’re offering,” Trump told reporters. According to him, Washington and Tehran are talking by phone, but he is not sure if they will reach an agreement. Iran is giving conditions that it cannot accept, he emphasized.
Iranian media reported on Friday that Through mediators from Pakistan, Tehran presented a new proposal to the United States to end the war. It happened on Thursday evening, but they did not release the details.
The White House declined to comment on the Iranian proposal on Friday before Trump’s announcement, saying discussions were continuing. “President Trump has made it clear that Iran must never possess a nuclear weapon, and negotiations continue to ensure the short-term and long-term national security of the United States,” declared White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly in a statement sent to AFP.
The war in the Middle East broke out on February 28 after the US-Israeli attacks on Iran. In response, Tehran began attacking other countries in the region. The conflict was suspended on April 8 by an agreed ceasefire. However, the delegations of both sides have completed only one round of negotiations on a more permanent peace so far. The talks appeared to have stalled as the United States imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports while Iran kept the Strait of Hormuz largely closed.
