The new packaging deposit system has caused people to talk (and question). A question asked by a viewer reached our newsroom: What happens to a bottle when the machine rejects it? A SIC Check.
With the implementation of the Deposit and Refund System (SDR), questions about the functioning of packaging return machines are multiplying.
One of the questions that reached the SIC Verifica editorial team is what happens when the machine rejects a package. Can you keep it or should you return it to the consumer?
What happens to the packaging?
At SIC, SDR Portugal, entity responsible for the system, explains that packaging that is not part of the Deposit and Refund System (SDR) or that do not meet the required conditions are not accepted by the so-called “Return Points”. This includes packaging that is damaged, deformed, not completely empty, does not have a legible barcode or does not display the system’s own symbol.
In these cases, the packaging is not retained by the machine and is returned to the consumer.
After being rejected, the packaging must be placed by the consumer in the appropriate recycling bin, highlights SDR Portugal
SIC verifies that it is…
The “Volta” System machines do not retain rejected packaging. When they do not meet the acceptance criteria, they are returned to the consumer. In these cases, the machine simply refuses the packaging for refund purposes, but does not retain it, and the consumer must send it to the appropriate recycling point.
