Why cash still wins hearts

The digitalization of the world is progressing in leaps and bounds, but when it comes to payments, things are progressing slowly in Austria. Not on the Internet, where you can’t make big leaps with cash, but in the real world, i.e. in local business premises. According to current data from the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB), 91 percent of all payments are still processed there and the majority of the population prefers to use coins and banknotes at the point of sale. Despite growing digital offerings and increasing card usage, 55 percent of all transactions in this country were settled in cash last year, according to the Payment methods study 2025 the OeNB.
