The Citizen Card in Portugal has different validity rules depending on the holder’s age, and the validity period can double from a certain point in life. This difference, often ignored, influences the frequency with which the document needs to be renewed. Furthermore, recent changes to the card model and European standards have introduced new deadlines and exceptions that affect millions of citizens.

According to the portal, the Citizen Card is valid for five years for citizens under 25 years of age. According to the same source, from the age of 25 this period increases to 10 years, automatically doubling the duration of the document.

Exceptions to the calendar

There are, however, situations in which validity does not follow these general rules. The portal writes that cards issued between August 2021 and June 2024 are valid until August 3, 2031, regardless of the holder’s age. Portugal began issuing a new Citizen Card model from June 11, 2024 and this update aims to comply with the standards defined by the European regulation on the security of identification documents.

From 2031, all documents will have to comply with common EU standards. This obligation led to the introduction of the new format, with improvements in terms of security and standardization. The Citizen Card is not only used for in-person identification, as the document also allows digital authentication, document signing and access to online services, as long as PIN codes and an appropriate reader are used.

A multipurpose document

The card brings together several identification numbers on a single physical medium. It includes civil, tax, health and social security data, also replacing the voter card. For citizens aged 25 and over, there are simplified renewal options. The same source states that, if there are no changes to the data, it is possible to automatically renew the card with home delivery.

If it is necessary to update information such as address or contact details, renewal can be done online. According to Justiça.gov, the possibility of face-to-face service in various locations also remains, including Citizen Stores and consular posts. There is also a service for citizens with travel difficulties. The external service allows you to process your Citizen Card at home or in institutions, through the presence of a technician.

Who can appeal

This service applies to people with reduced mobility or unable to move around. According to the same source, it can be used in contexts such as healthcare units or prisons. The Citizen Card continues to be the main means of identification for Portuguese people and is accepted both nationally and in European Union countries.

Variation in validity depending on age can impact document management over time. Knowing these rules allows you to avoid unnecessary renewals or delays.
