Son of mayor of Jequitinhonha dies in plane crash

Fernando Moreira Souto, son of the mayor of Jequitinhonha, was on board the aircraft with 4 other people; pilot also died

The son of the mayor of Jequitinhonha (MG) (PDT), is one of the victims of the plane that crashed this Monday (May 4, 2026) in Belo Horizonte (MG). Fernando Moreira Souto was 36 years old and was on board the aircraft, which lost altitude and crashed into a residential building, in the Silveira neighborhood. Souto was a veterinarian. Leaves wife and 2 children.

In addition Souto, another person died in the plane crash in BH. According to , this is pilot Wellington Oliveira, 34 years old, born in Colorado, Paraná. Three of the 5 people on board the aircraft were rescued alive by firefighters and taken, in serious condition, to medical care at Hospital João 23.

There were no casualties in the building and all residents were evacuated safely from the building. Details about the regularization of the plane will be investigated by the (Aeronautical Accident Investigation and Prevention Center).

The single-engine aircraft is model EMB-721C, manufactured in 1979. Hplane taking off from the Vale do Jequitinhonha region. It landed at Pampulha airport, in BH, and took off again at 12:16 pm, heading to São Paulo.

The Government of Minas issued a note of condolence over the accident and said that, in addition to Cenipa, the Civil Police is also investigating “within the scope of its competences” the causes of the accident.

“The Government of Minas Gerais expresses its regret and offers solidarity to the family and friends of the fatal victims of a small aircraft accident that occurred in Belo Horizonte. The State also wishes a speedy recovery to the three hospitalized victims.

“The Security Forces were involved in the incident from the very beginning. The Minas Gerais Military Fire Department (CBMMG) mobilized teams to rescue, remove residents and eliminate risks at the site, with support from the Military Police.

“The Civil Police carried out the investigation and began investigating the causes of the accident, within the scope of its competences. The State Civil Defense Coordination (Cedec) remains available to support the municipality.

“The injured victims were taken to João XXIII Hospital. The Minas Gerais State Hospital Foundation (Fhemig) will publish a bulletin with updated information on their health status.”
