Russia lost more territory than it gained in Ukraine in April for the first time since the Ukrainian counteroffensive in mid-2023, according to an AFP analysis based on data from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). Moscow relinquished control of about 120 square kilometers between March and April, according to ISW data. Although the fighting on the front reached a situation close to stalemate, intense and deadly attacks, mostly by drones, have continued unabated in recent months. Russia’s advances have slowed since late 2025, as communications problems in the Russian military, coupled with Ukrainian counterattacks, helped kyiv make localized progress in the southeast. However, the Ukrainian military’s net gains – the first in more than two years – were marginal, representing just 0.02% of Ukrainian territory, according to the data.
