Carlos Brito died at the age of 93 in Faro hospital. He was leader of the communist parliamentary group for fifteen years and candidate to the Presidency of the Republic in 1980.
Carlos Brito, a historic member of the PCP, who led the communist parliamentary group for fifteen years, died this Thursday. She was 93 years old and lived in Alcoutim, in the district of Faro.
Carlos Brito even ran for President of the Republic in 1980, but withdrew in favor of Ramalho Eanes. In the following years, he worked as Álvaro Cunhal’s right-hand man. Already thebefore, it had been the communist leader on April 25th.
He was suspended from the PCP for ten months in 2002, accused of “fractional behavior” for join the Communist Renewal Movement, a group of “renovators” within the party. After the suspension period ended, Carlos Brito decided not to return to the party’s ranks.
