Andreas “Andi” Vojta can remember the second of August 2009 very clearly. Athletics Championships on the Linzer Gugl, decision over 1500 meters. The Tyrolean Daniel Spitzl is the favorite and, as expected, pulls away from Vojta, who is six years younger. But the 20-year-old from Lower Austria doesn’t give up. “I was already a few meters behind, but my final sprint wasn’t bad, I overtook him just before the finish, which almost surprised him a bit.” Spitzl (3:53.71) is annoyed, and Vojta (3:53.61) celebrates his first ever athletics championship title. “A very special day.”
