The president of the Senate, , expressed to government emissaries his desire to speak personally with the president . The idea is to rebuild bridges after the House imposed a historic defeat on the PT member last week, from the Union’s attorney general, Jorge Messias, to the STF (Supreme Federal Court).
Alcolumbre warned his interlocutors that he wanted to close the case — in his words, “pass the rule” in the episode. In these conversations, the president of the Senate maintains that he did not work against Lula’s nomination and that the rejection was the result of a decision, the risk of which he had previously warned Planalto about.
The message is that the parliamentarian does not want to harm the government and will not block proposals or plan unpleasant surprises for the Executive.
Until Messias’ defeat, Alcolumbre was seen as the president of a House that gave Lula few headaches. The tone given by the Amapá senator is that it remains in his interest to play alongside the government. He had communicated to allies in the center that he was only trying to open a channel of dialogue with , the PT member’s main opponent in the presidential election, but without joining the opposition.
Lula, in turn, also made it clear that he does not want to burn bridges with Alcolumbre. After last week’s defeat, he said “life goes on” to his organizers. On Tuesday (5), the minister went to meet the Senator to feel the temperature. On Wednesday (6), it was the minister’s turn to have lunch with the head of the Legislature.
In the Senate, Alcolumbre has spoken with Lula’s allies, such as the government leader in Congress, Randolfe Rodrigues (PT-AP), with whom he met this Thursday morning (7).
Among the list of possibilities suggested by Planalto to improve performance in the Senate, is the change of government leadership occupants in the House. Allies suggest that Randolfe be removed because of his proximity to Alcolumbre, the alliance in Amapá, and also because the PT member will need to dedicate himself to re-election in the state.
The government leader in the Senate, Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), is also the target of objections. Alcolumbre broke relations with the PT member during the Messias nomination process, and a wing of the government points out the impossibility of keeping him in leadership without a direct relationship with the president of the House.
The government has important proposals in Alcolumbre’s hands. The PECs (Proposed Amendments to the Constitution) (Single Social Assistance System) and the PECs are about to be voted on in the Senate. The project that regulates the exploration of critical minerals in Brazil, the so-called “rare earths”, is also awaiting analysis by senators.
The government’s legislative priority for the election, , will also need to pass through the Senate. The PEC is in the Chamber and should be voted on by the end of May. In other words, Planalto will need Alcolumbre’s good will to approve it by June, a month that is naturally more turbulent due to the intensification of the pre-campaign and the start of the World Cup.
Despite these movements, the phase of the relationship between Alcolumbre and the government was described as abrasive by a Lula minister. And, even with this mutual effort of rapprochement, the involvement of leaders from the center with the PT should be explored in the presidential dispute.
Regarding the rejection of Messias, for example, the strategy will be to repeat that Lula’s opponents joined forces with STF ministers to prevent the investigations from progressing, harming an evangelical.
The association of Bolsonaro supporters in the case threatens to sour the relationship with party leaders being investigated. Pivot of the scandal, former banker Daniel Vorcaro in 2025 at the official residence of the Senate, according to his conversations with one of the cell phones seized by the PF.
Amprev (Amapá Previdência), manager of the state’s own pension scheme, invested R$400 million in the bank’s high-risk bonds. The institution was commanded by Jocildo Silva Lemos, and Alcolumbre’s political godson.
