Category claims real increase of 10% and 5.4% in the floor; Ricardo Nunes city hall states that the proposal follows inflation
Workers from the municipal education network in São Paulo rejected, on Thursday (May 7, 2026), the 3.51% adjustment offered by the mayor’s administration (MDB). The category decided to maintain the strike, which began on April 28. Professionals demand a 5.4% increase in the teaching salary and a 14.56% salary increase. Here are the claims (PDF – 271 KB).
O from the City Hall, proposes the adjustment in 2 installments: the 1st of 2%, from May 2026, and the 2nd of 1.48%, from May 1, 2027, with the possibility of payment in 2026, if there is budget availability.
The proposal was approved in the 1st round by the São Paulo City Council on Wednesday (May 6, 2026). There is still a 2th vote left, scheduled for next week.
To the the adjustment, the category stated that the percentage does not meet the economic demands of Coeduc (Coordination of Specific Union Entities for Municipal Education). Workers cited “neglect and disrespect” of the municipal government.
The claims include:
- salary appreciation and real increase;
- career, functional development and benefits;
- end of confiscation and reduction of the social security rate from 14% to 11%;
- health of education professionals, functioning of schools and working conditions, special education from an inclusive perspective, municipalization of early childhood education, comprehensive education and valorization of the Education Support Framework;
- participation, transparency and democratic management.
“The category approved intensifying the movement, so that all teachers, managers and professionals in the Support Framework stop their activities, in defense of their rights and careers”, wrote, in a note, Claudio Fonseca, president of Sinpeem (Union of Education Professionals in Municipal Education of São Paulo).
The category also stated that the PL does not address working conditions, such as increasing modules, inclusion, expanding the direct network and reducing the number of students per room, class and group, among other demands.
WHAT THE CITY HALL SAYS
São Paulo City Hall in a note, which promotes a “structured policy for valuing employees, with revisions to initial remunerations for strategic careers and investments that already total more than R$7 billion“. He also stated that he will commit to bringing forward the payment of the 2nd installment to November or December 2026.
The São Paulo Chamber will hold a public hearing to debate the PL, on Tuesday (May 12, 2026), at 10:30 am. The following day, the category will hold a demonstration and assembly, at 2 pm, in front of the city hall, in the center of the capital of São Paulo.
