The two hostages are free in Rhineland-Palatinate, but the perpetrators have escaped, the police announced.
The SEK special unit broke into the Volksbank branch a little while ago and found in the vault two people who had been held hostage since the morning, but not the perpetrators, who have escaped. The hostages are safe and sound, while a search for the perpetrators is now underway in the area.
At 10:00 (Greece time) a cash delivery car stopped outside the bank and the driver got out to consult with the employees, when he was attacked by an unknown man. It is assumed that one of the hostages was the driver of the vehicle, while the police have not given information about the number of the perpetrators.
Hundreds of police officers are involved in the operation, while special forces were also rushed from the neighboring states of Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia.
