MP requests preventive detention for four police officers detained for alleged torture at PSP police stations in Lisbon

The Public Ministry requested preventive detention for four of the 14 PSP agents detained during an operation for alleged crimes of physical and psychological torture in police stations in Lisbon. House arrest was requested for three other suspects. The interrogations have now ended: all the suspects who spoke in court denied the accusations.

The 14 PSP agents arrived at the Justice Campus at around 9:15.

After two days of interrogations, which ended on Friday afternoon, the suspects are closer to knowing the coercive measures that will be applied to them.

Everything now depends on the judge’s decision, with measures ranging from identity and residence terms to preventive detention.

The first hours of this Saturday’s session were dedicated to allegations made by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which, according to SIC, requested preventive detention for four of the detainees and house arrest for another three.

Among the 15 detainees – 14 police officers and one civilian – 13 are suspected of crimes of physical and psychological torture.

The indictment order, to which SIC had access, speaks of at least ten cases of violence since October 2023.

The suspects allegedly committed serious crimes, such as attacks by punching and kicking, sexual violence and cruel and inhumane treatment against detainees taken to the Rato and Bairro Alto police stations, in Lisbon.

All suspects who spoke in court denied the charges. The coercive measures must still be known today.
