Strawberries are best eaten fresh, as they lose many valuable nutrients during heat treatment. When storing, it is recommended to put them unwashed in the refrigerator, where they will last three to five days. The Regional Office of Public Health (RÚVZ) Bratislava stated this on the social network.
“It is recommended to wash strawberries just before eating them, because they will spoil faster if they are soaked in water for a long time. Longer storage is also possible in the freezer, where they can last for several months.” he added. He recommends eating strawberries fresh, in fruit or vegetable salads. “You can add them to yogurt or porridge or to smoothies,” he advises. In the case of wild strawberries, their leaves can also be consumed, from which tea can be made.
RÚVZ explained that strawberries contain a large amount of water and nutrients, thanks to which they are beneficial for health. “They are rich in vitamins, such as B vitamins and vitamin C, the content of which is comparable to that of citrus fruits. They are also rich in minerals, such as potassium and manganese,” clarified Natália Šranková from the RÚVZ health consultancy. Strawberries are also rich in fiber and have antioxidant effects.
After eating strawberries, Šranková recommends monitoring the body’s reaction. “After eating, both children and adults can sometimes experience allergic symptoms, such as rashes, itching in the throat and lips, tearing or indigestion,” she clarified.
