More than 100 people are sick with norovirus, a germ that causes acute gastroenteritis, on board a cruise that left Florida, in the United States, last week and will return to this American state on Monday.

A total of 102 passengers and 13 crew members on the Caribbean Princess cruise ship, which is sailing near the Bahamas, have reported being sick with the virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a statement.

To contain the outbreak, the ship’s crew intensified “cleaning and disinfection” measures, isolated infected people and consulted health authorities on “cleaning” and case notification procedures, as detailed in the statement.

The cruise is scheduled to arrive at Port Canaveral, on the outskirts of Orlando, on Monday, May 11, according to cruise tracking portal CruiseMapper.

A total of 3,116 passengers travel aboard the ship, so the current outbreak affects 3% of travelers.

Norovirus is the leading cause of diarrhea and vomiting outbreaks in the United States, according to the CDC, and spreads through direct contact with other infected people, consumption of food and drinks contaminated with the virus, and touching contaminated surfaces.
