Lula receives Michelle Bachelet this Monday at Planalto

Brazilian government defends that the former president of Chile should be the next secretary general of the UN

The president (PT) receives, former head of state of Chile, this Monday (May 11, 2026). The meeting will be at 3:30 pm at Palácio do Planalto, in Brasília (DF).

The Brazilian government wants Bachelet to be the next secretary general of the UN. The position is currently held by the Portuguese.

The president of Chile, (Republican Party, right), supported the country itself for Bachelet after taking over the Chilean government in March.

Bachelet was president of Chile for 2 terms, directed 2 UN bodies and knows the internal dynamics of the organization. For Planalto, none of the candidates in dispute has comparable experience.

Today, there are 4 candidates for the General Secretariat. Three are Latin American:

  • Bachelet;
  • Rafael Mariano Grossi, an Argentinean who heads the International Atomic Energy Agency;
  • Rebeca Grynspan, former 2nd vice president of Costa Rica.

Macky Sall, former president of Senegal, appears as a possible African candidate.

The choice does not go through the General Assembly. The decision will be taken by the UN Security Council, where the permanent members – such as the USA, China and Russia – have veto power.
