The Judiciary Police are investigating a violent armed robbery that took place in a goldsmith’s shop in Almada, which reportedly netted the criminals around 50 thousand euros.
The attack took place on April 28, on one of the city’s main streets, when the 82-year-old owner of the store was preparing to close the establishment for lunchtime.
Video surveillance images show two hooded men, wearing gloves and armed, quickly entering the goldsmith’s shop. Despite offering no resistance, the owner was violently grabbed by the neck by one of the robbers, almost asphyxiating her.
While one of the suspects immobilized the victim, the other destroyed the windows and filled bags with gold pieces and other high-value items.
The robbery lasted just 32 seconds, but left the owner seriously injured. The woman remains hospitalized at Garcia de Orta Hospital due to injuries caused by broken glass.
The Civil Police are now analyzing images from monitoring cameras near the location, in an attempt to identify the suspects and the vehicle used in the getaway.
The case has caused strong outrage due to the violence carried out against the elderly victim.
