Lula reaffirms support for Michelle Bachelet’s UN candidacy after meeting in Planalto

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) reaffirmed his support for the candidacy of former president of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, for the General Secretariat of the United Nations (UN). On social network X, the president stated that Bachelet has the credentials to command the UN because of her experience in command of the Chilean government and her knowledge of the entity’s functions.

“Her experience as head of state and in-depth knowledge of the UN accredits her to be the first Latin American woman to lead the organization,” stated Lula.

Bachelet met with Lula at Palácio do Planalto this Monday, the 11th. In the post, the president said that he discussed with Bachelet “themes on the international agenda and the role that a reformed UN needs to play in promoting peace and sustainable development, as well as strengthening multilateralism”.

This is not the first time that Lula has used the X to publicly support Bachelet. In early February, he said that, when endorsing the Chilean, “in eight decades of history, it is time for the organization to finally be led by a woman”.

“Bachelet’s career is marked by pioneering spirit. She was the first woman to preside over Chile, twice, and the first to occupy the positions of Minister of Defense and Health in her country. In the United Nations system, she played a decisive role in the creation and consolidation of UN Women, as its first executive director, giving institutional scale to the equality agenda”, declared the president.

The election for the UN General Secretariat takes place in July this year. Competing with Chilean Rafael Grossi (Argentina), Rebeca Grynspan (Costa Rica) and Macky Sall (Senegal). Following a tradition of rotation between continents, it would be time for the entity to be led by a Latin American.
