HOW IMPEACHMENT WORKS

The Constitution establishes that it is up to the Senate to prosecute and judge Supreme Court ministers for crimes of responsibility. Any citizen can file a complaint against a member of the STF.

Representations must be filed with the Senate, where they are called “PET” (Petition). It is up to the President of the House to accept or archive the requests. There is no deadline for analysis.

If you decide to accept, the petition is forwarded to the Senate Advocacy, which carries out a technical assessment of the proposal before it is analyzed by the Steering Committee. Only after that can the impeachment be taken to the senators for deliberation.

To date, an impeachment request against a STF minister has never been approved.
