The choice of destinations outside Europe to live in retirement has gained weight among many French retirees, especially among those looking for a more peaceful, sunny and financially balanced daily life. The climate, cost of living and quality of daily life are among the factors that most influence this decision.

It is in this context that Agadir, in Morocco, has emerged as an increasingly attractive option for French retirees. According to , the city has won over those looking for an alternative to more traditional destinations, such as Spain, Portugal or Senegal.

The increase in the cost of living in France, especially in housing and essential goods, has led many retirees to consider a permanent move or, at least, an extended stay for a few months of the year. Agadir appears on this list because it combines lower prices, a mild climate and a routine marked by proximity to the sea.

With pleasant temperatures for much of the year and around 300 days of sunshine, the city allows for an outdoor lifestyle that is difficult to maintain in many European countries during the winter. One of the pensioners interviewed by the same source summarizes this advantage: “We live outdoors almost all year round; it’s good for our spirits and our health”.

Much lower cost of living

The financial factor appears as one of the main reasons for the change. Several testimonies cited indicate that, in Agadir, it is possible to support rent, food and current expenses with amounts between 900 and 1,000 euros per month, maintaining a level of comfort that would be more difficult to achieve in France.

Nathalie and Yves, originally from Marseille, moved to Agadir in 2014. According to the same source, the couple states that their monthly expenses represent around half of what they paid in French territory, which allowed them to rent a spacious house with a garden for around 800 euros per month.

Nathalie also highlights the difference felt in local markets: “When I go to the Agadir souk, I spend less than ten euros on fruit and vegetables, enough for a week”. For many retirees, this difference in everyday prices is decisive when choosing a new destination.

More serenity and easier integration

In addition to the cost of living and the climate, Agadir is described as a quieter city than other Moroccan urban centers such as Marrakech. The proximity to the beach, the possibility of walking along the seafront and the perception of safety are aspects frequently valued by those who settle in the city.

The presence of an already consolidated French-speaking community also helps in the adaptation process. For many French retirees, the language and the existence of informal support networks make the change less sudden and facilitate integration into local daily life.

Nathalie herself remembers that the idea began to gain strength after a conversation during a plane trip: “I spoke to a woman on the plane who told us that, with R$1,000 a month, she had a house, food and even money to fly once a month to visit her children. We thought: why not…?”.

The decision also ended up influencing Nathalie’s mother, Jo, who joined her daughter after becoming a widow, according to the same source. About the new routine, Jo says: “I don’t cook here anymore; I go to restaurants every day, something unthinkable in France.”

Formalities and tax framework

Moving to Agadir involves complying with some administrative procedures. Among them is the application for a residence permit, valid for one year and renewable, a necessary step for those who intend to settle in the country for a longer period of time.

Opening an account at a local bank can also bring tax advantages, depending on the specific situation of each retiree. According to HuffPost, this combination of more controlled expenses, pleasant climate, safe environment and relatively simple integration has reinforced interest in Agadir.

The geographic proximity to Portugal is another point to be taken into account. Agadir has air connections from Lisbon and Porto at various times of the year, often provided by low-cost companies such as Ryanair.

Flight times are between 1h50 and 2h05, which makes the city relatively accessible for those who want to maintain frequent contact with family and friends. At times, there may also be options with a stopover through other carriers, expanding travel possibilities.

For those looking for a retirement with more sun, less financial pressure and a calmer routine, Agadir has been establishing itself as an alternative outside of Europe. Still, as with any change of country, the decision requires planning, updated information and attention to legal and tax procedures.
