I don’t believe the judge’s death inspired the cartoon – 05/15/2026 – Frederico Vasconcelos

Last Saturday (9), two judges linked to feminist movements suggested that I make a counterpoint to the demonstrations of repudiation of a cartoon by Marilia Marz published in .

The piece features a tombstone in the cemetery with the words: “Little life, more or less, until I lost it next to the penduricalhos”.

The cartoon was associated, unduly in my opinion, with having occurred days before, after the egg collection.

I wasn’t following social media. I hadn’t spoken to anyone, but I said: “I don’t believe that the author and the newspaper thought about the judge’s death when creating and editing the cartoon. I don’t know the cartoonist, but I have difficulty accepting this association.”

On the same day, I was approached by two more judges and a lawyer (retired judge), to whom I gave my first evaluation.

The five are experienced, used to reviewing positions. I’ve known some for over 20 years.

Persistent ill will

The next day, cartoonist: “The tragic death of judge Mariana Ferreira was not the inspiration for the cartoon, and I am very sorry that this association was made. I only learned about this horrible coincidence and interpretation from the attacks on the internet. I am very sorry.”

This statement did not cool the criticism. In an article entitled “Chargist did not mock the judge’s death”, the columnist asks: “What empathy does anyone have who uses the memory of a dead woman to destroy, in life, the reputation and career of another woman?”

: “Too late. All the courts had already decided that my mind operated in a macabre and cruel key, according to which mocking another woman’s death was reasonable.”

The cartoonist was left alone.

Removing Assumptions

I reproduce some arguments that I presented to the judges in messages:

– I respect the pain of the judge’s family. But the cartoon (inappropriate and unfortunate) could have been created thinking about a judge who approves pennants to pay for gym memberships and family expenses.

– The tombstone in the cartoon makes no suggestion about gender. Only the author’s signature.

– I thought it was mean to suggest that the cartoonist ignored gender inequality and offended a judge whose death had nothing to do with pendants.

– Any (male) court president could be “buried” there. Or from , from the Public Ministry, from .

– Why not assume that the tombstone was aimed at sexists?

– It may be cruel to suggest that the cartoonist made the drawing thinking about the sad case of the judge.

– The issue of hangings bothers the judges. But this controversy involves other careers.

– If you read today’s column [sábado] from the criminalist, you will see that the criticism about the penduricalhos is not just in the Judiciary. See the list of entities he places.

– I borrow questions that editors would ask reporters: was the cartoonist heard? Was the family of the judge who died heard?

– Judges’ associations are fuming over the newspaper’s criticism. They forget that the Constitution has been circumvented.

– The ministers who now defend the ceiling have many personal reasons, I believe, for shouting.

– The moment may have been unfortunate, the cartoon too, but the judge’s death has nothing to do with the pendants.

– There was precipitation. And perhaps a great injustice was done to the author of the cartoon, who signed the piece. And she’s a woman.

I preferred the risk of making a mistake in my assessment rather than being unfair.

Judges’ criticisms

Here are some comments from the judges:

– The terrible timing and disrespect for the class is undeniable. The vehicle making its contribution to a true cancellation of the judiciary.

– Everyone in the career, including me, is incredulous and deeply offended by this cartoon that Sheet published.

– It was predictable that the Sheet would blame the victim. The newspaper above all… There is still time to have more empathy. It’s time for the Sheet see judges as people. You don’t see it today.

– If it was intentional [associar a charge com a juíza morta]this is appalling cruelty. If it wasn’t, it was a timing error, the kind that the newspaper doesn’t forgive in other professionals.
