The former minister of Joaquim Barbosa joined the DC (Christian Democracy) party at the beginning of April. The party intends to launch him as a candidate for President of the Republic.
At the beginning of the year, he presented the presidential pre-candidacy of former minister Aldo Rebelo. Aldo was offered the possibility of running for another position.
When contacted by the Panel, Barbosa, 71, declined to comment.
In 11 years at the court, he presided over the Supreme Court and was the rapporteur of the mensalão case. In the 2018 election, when he was affiliated with the PSB, he even flirted with a presidential run, but ended up giving up.
This time, the DC believes his disposition will be different. The party carried out qualitative research testing the former minister’s name, and the result was considered positive, with a strong identification with the banner of ethics.

The party’s priority is to provide a campaign structure for the former minister, considering that the DC is a small party, with few resources and no TV time, nor the right to participate in debates.
The party president, João Caldas, has already made contacts with leaders of other parties proposing alliances. The bet is also that Barbosa will score well in the next polls and thus attract the interest of possible allies.
