Odair Cunha takes office as the new TCU minister – 05/20/2026 – Brasília Hoje

Deputy Odair Cunha (-MG) took office this Wednesday (20) as the new minister of the (Court of Auditors of the Union), with a large presence of ministers, former ministers of (PT) and PT parliamentarians.

Among the members of the government base who attended the event were the president and vice-president of the PT, Edinho Silva and Jilmar Tatto, respectively, and members of the party in Congress, such as Pedro Uczai (PT-SC), Lindbergh Farias (PT-RJ), in addition to the deputy and candidate for the Senate from Paraná, Gleisi Hoffmann.

The PT member’s name was approved by the Chamber and the Senate in April. The signature of his appointment was made by President Lula days later, in a closed event at the Palácio do Planalto, with the presence of the president of the TCU, Vital do Rêgo Filho, and the minister José Guimarães (Institutional Relations).

Odair Cunha had support from the government’s base, with PT, PC do B, PV, PSB, PDT, PSOL and Rede in his alliance, as well as a wing from the center, such as the MDB, part of the PP and the president of the Chamber, (PB), who also attended the inauguration. Cunha thanked Motta by name for supporting his candidacy for the position.

The president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP), who is experiencing a moment of trembling with Lula, also attended.

The bench from Minas Gerais, state of Cunha, was also present on the occasion. In his speech, the deputy mentioned the defense of institutions, thanked the presidents of Congress for their support and cried when mentioning family members.

“Strong institutions are those capable of acting with responsibility, balance and public commitment. They are the ones that offer stability, predictability and trust to society”, he declared.

The presence of Odair Cunha’s parents and daughters was highlighted in more than one moment during the ceremony, in the speeches of the president of the court, Vital do Rêgo Filho, and the Attorney General Cristina Machado da Costa e Silva.
