Government led review meeting on FAO’s Global Alliance against Hunger
The president (PT) participated in the coordination meeting of the FAO Global Alliance against Hunger (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) this Friday (May 22, 2026). The meeting aimed to take stock of the multilateral initiative, launched in November 2024.
For the government, the group of member countries faced, right at the beginning of the measure, a difficult international situation. One of the examples is the which deals with the by the United States to the country’s energy sector.
Since it was launched, there has been a process of structuring the Alliance’s support mechanism, with offices in:
- Rome (main headquarters);
- Brasilia;
- Ethiopia (Africa);
- Thailand (Asia);
- Washington DC (USA).

The Alliance has a term until 2030 and can be renewed. One challenge mentioned is the growing number of international conflicts, which have redirected development resources to other purposes.
One of the participants at the meeting was First Lady Janja da Silva. In March of this year, she Champion of Social Equality by FAO due to her work with the institution. With the title, she took on the mission of publicizing the organization’s scientific efforts and raising global awareness about eradicating hunger and poverty.
After the start of the Alliance, FAO announced, in June 2025, that Brazil . The country had left the map in 2014, but returned to the index in the three-year period from 2018 to 2020, with the reduction of social programs. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, around 24 million Brazilians have left the situation of severe food insecurity by the end of 2023.

- Carla Barroso, head of the Brazilian Delegation to the FAO;
- Renato Godinho, director of the Support Mechanism of the Global Alliance against Hunger.
